In 2008,
Leighton Farm placed over 150 horses.
This number is three times the placement rate of most non profits. In order to continue this work, we became a 501(c)(3) non profit. The main goal of Thoroughbred Placement and Rescue, Inc. is to provide racing owners and
trainers in the mid-atlantic region, a way to reach people who want show and
riding horses. In this way, we can direct retiring racehorses into the right
hands. We assist horsemen in placing their retired racehorses into good homes so they
can enjoy meaningful, productive lives when their racing careers are over. These
horses will avoid ending up in the slaughter pipeline and suffering an
unspeakable end.
One thing that sets TPR, Inc. apart from other placement programs is that it
is a vehicle for thoroughbred horsemen to take responsibility for their own
retiring racehorses. What is happening is a cooperative effort on the backstretch
by owners and trainers to get their horses into the best possible hands. Too
many times the responsibility falls on people outside the industry, when it
should be borne primarily by us, with their support.
TPR, Inc. has a unique understanding of the thoroughbred racing industry and
this allows us to
bridge the gap between the show/pleasure world and the racing industry.

We are actively involved in the
rescue
of thoroughbreds who are in need. Both through funding and direct
involvement. As can be seen by the before and after photos of
Grandy Bear. Our efforts are paying off!

work, take a look at the

We work to change the
unfair image of thoroughbred horses. We as thoroughbred horsemen must take steps
to change this. Through education and example this can be done. Many people
would consider a horse off the track if they had the information to successfully
transition the horse to their chosen discipline. Resources such as our
online book help the public to understand
retiring racehorses.
We are against the
slaughter of horses and
believe that participants
in the industry should be educated about slaughter and the pipeline that
exists. This is a scar on the racing industry. The fact that some of our
athletes are disposed of in this way, is intolerable.
